How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Contents

Traditional orthodontics, although an effective way of restoring uneven dentition, is no longer compatible with the demands of the modern world, especially from an aesthetic point of view.

Not like the Invisalign method, which was able to fundamentally change orthodontics!

According to official figures, more than 18 million patients worldwide have already successfully used Invisalign technology, which has become the alpha and omega of invisible orthodontics.

It's no coincidence that many try to copy it, but none can match the quality and efficiency of the original product. Although more and more people are recognising the potential it holds, there are certain questions that can often only be answered before treatment.

This includes questions such as how long Invisalign invisible braces treatment takes. Since the topic is particularly complex, we've decided to dedicate a complete article to answering it.

How long does Invisalign treatment generally last?
Before we move on to specific cases, it is worth first examining the duration of Invisalign treatment in general terms.

Most of the time, this invisible orthodontic method is used for 12-18 months to achieve good results, but each case is unique and the treatment can last from 6 months to 2 years.

What does it all depend on? Mostly depends on whether

What serious and complex disorders need to be treated;

how well the patient follows the doctor's instructions;

and how much experience you have in choosing an orthodontist.

At NaturaDent, we have extensive professional experience, working exclusively with the original Invisalign technology, and we ensure precise sampling in several steps (3Shape and our own iTero scanners) before the design, which, combined with our years of orthodontic experience, guarantees efficiency.

The duration of Invisalign treatment varies from person to person because...
It is entirely common for traditional orthodontic solutions to have varying treatment durations depending on the individual, as no two sets of teeth and no two problems are exactly alike. This can, and indeed must, be taken into account with Invisalign technology.

Below, we have therefore collected the most common lesions and the expected duration of invisible orthodontic treatment recommended for them, so that everyone can find the answer to their questions.

Duration of Invisalign treatment for open bite
An open bite is when, with a closed jaw, the upper and lower rows of teeth do not touch or meet each other, and there is a gap of varying size. It most often develops in the front teeth, but can also be found elsewhere.

With Invisalign invisible braces, open bites are very manageable and full closure of the dentition can be achieved, usually within 12-24 months depending on the severity of the lesion.

Duration of Invisalign treatment in case of overbite
Overbite can be discussed when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth more than they should. A minimal overlap between the teeth is essential for a correct bite, but if this exceeds 1-2 millimetres, it is considered an overbite.

This lesion can also be effectively treated with Invisalign, with mild cases being restored in as little as 6 months, but severe overbite can take up to 36 months to correct.

Duration of Invisalign treatment for crossbite
A crossbite is a particularly complex dental anomaly where the teeth do not overlap properly, with some lower teeth protruding past the upper teeth. It can be an open bite or an overbite, or a combination of the two.

Orthodontic treatment in such cases always requires special attention, as it is a difficult to treat lesion, but an experienced Invisalign specialist dentist like NaturaDent can solve the problem in 12-36 months.

Duration of Invisalign treatment for overjet
An overjet is also a more complex dental anomaly that develops when there is too large a horizontal gap between the upper and lower teeth, causing the upper teeth to often sit behind the lower ones.

Thanks to Invisalign clear aligners, this complex anomaly can also be corrected, but the duration is significantly influenced by the severity of the overjet and whether there are other misalignments. Treatment typically takes between 6-24 months.

Duration of Invisalign treatment in case of congestion
Crowded teeth are one of the most common problems requiring orthodontic treatment. This phenomenon can occur when teeth grow in the wrong position, become too close together, and affect the other teeth as well.

The degree of crowding always determines the duration of the Invisalign treatment. Milder cases can be corrected in as little as 6 months, while more severe cases may require up to 36 months of treatment to achieve the desired outcome.

Duration of Invisalign treatment for gaps between teeth
Many factors can be behind the formation of gaps between teeth. It is also a common lesion that can be corrected very easily and effectively with invisible braces.

The duration here also depends on the number of gaps and their size. In milder cases, treatments of 6 months can already yield spectacular results, while the correction of more severe changes may require up to 24 months.

How long does Invisalign treatment take compared to traditional braces?
In this respect, there is no significant difference between the two orthodontic technologies. It is important to know that Invisalign technology is not always faster, but it has a different background and is therefore more gentle and aesthetic.

There are dental problems that can be treated more quickly with traditional braces, while at other times the invisible Invisalign method is more effective.

Experience has shown that Invisalign technology can achieve faster results, especially in the case of open bites and blockages, but the duration is still determined by the extent of the lesion.

In most cases, the aforementioned problems can be eliminated with this method within 6-24 months.

How can I speed up my Invisalign treatment?
An important point concerning invisible orthodontics is that the total duration of the treatment will always be as long as it takes for the desired tooth movements to occur. This cannot be sped up, at most it can be slowed down if the aligners are not used properly, i.e., they are out of the mouth for more hours than recommended.

The Invisalign technology involves moving the teeth by means of transparent rails made of a special material, which normally need to be replaced every two weeks. Each splint applies extra gentle pressure to the teeth that need correction.

As this method, unlike traditional braces, is planned, the designated timeframe can only be maintained if the patient uses the aligners as prescribed.

This means that the appliances must be worn for at least 22 hours a day and should only be removed for eating or oral care, as keeping teeth clean is essential and, unlike traditional solutions, there are no obstacles to keeping teeth clean, as they are much easier to keep clean than with traditional porcelain braces with archwires.

If, for some reason, the transparent rails cannot be used for a longer period of time, the rail or pair of rails must be used for that much longer before switching.

How does the duration of Invisalign treatment differ between adults and children?
The duration of Invisalign treatment is also determined by whether it is used in adults or children.

Technology is also functional in children, especially teenagers, and indeed it is much more popular in their case due to the more advantageous aesthetic background.

Generally speaking, children's teeth respond more quickly to invisible braces, so a shorter time is often sufficient to achieve good results, but the duration can be influenced by a number of factors.

This includes the extent of the abnormality, as milder cases can be corrected in 6-12 months, but for more severe problems, it is possible that treatment cycles of 24-36 months are necessary even for children.

However, this is much rarer in children than in adults, who often require other interventions before invisible orthodontics, as teeth with tartar or cavities need to be treated first.
